A Sweet Corner in Every Mall and Market Stall
A Sweet Corner in every mall and market stall — that’s the idea, at least for former government employee Voltaire Magpayo and his wife Cholly, and so far, their franchise, Sweet Corner, is making good time. Launched in July of 2009, the three-square meter food kart that sells popcorn, shredded corn, sweet corn shake, and “every other product related to corn” (as how Magpayo puts it) now boasts of 20 branches all over the Philippines.
By the time this article sees print, the latest, situated in SM Batangas, should have opened.
Magpayo, who used to work for the Philippine Tourism Authority, says it was a matter of being at the right place and at the right time. The Magpayos had been seeking alternative means of income to support their growing family –Voltaire was away from home most of the time, checking the tourism prospects of various destinations in the country, and Cholly was a housewife who was taking care of their two children. Maybe it was the entrepreneurial DNA from Cholly’s side of the family that was looking for opportunities; but as early as three years ago, the couple had become franchisees themselves of another food cart owner, running about three stalls that were based in SM Megamall and Robinson’s.
